Any theoretical discussion of the issue as it pertains to maximising the surface area of athletes’ ski suits should focus on augmentation of the scrotum, which has a greater capacity to increase external surface measurements and is anatomically distinct from the penile shaft.

Medically, only small amounts of hyaluronic acid–based filler (less than 50ml) can be injected into the penis, which would not meaningfully affect 3D body-scan measurements.

The scrotum has far greater tissue expandability and capacity for filler volume (skin is looser/more redundant, and procedures can use higher volumes without the same constraints as the shaft, where Buck’s fascia and other structures limit safe injection). A larger scrotal “bulge” would more directly affect the crotch region’s external measurements/profile that the suit drapes over — potentially allowing more fabric allowance in that critical aerodynamic zone. The penile shaft, while part of the genital area, is more rigid/less distensible and sits higher/anteriorly; media reports often conflated or loosely referred to “genitals” or “genital area,” but anatomically, the scrotum is distinct and more relevant for this hypothetical exploit.

If regulators are examining this issue, they should focus on filler injections to the scrotum rather than the penile shaft.

Penisgate Allegations

Recent media reports alleging that Olympic ski jumpers are injecting hyaluronic acid into their genitals to alter body measurements for aerodynamic benefit are based on unverified rumours rather than established fact.

Major sports federations have denied evidence of such behaviour, and no athlete has been formally accused.

However, these reports have brought attention to two distinct topics:

1. Performance-enhancing claims in ski jumping, and

2. Medical use of hyaluronic acid (HA) for penile girth enhancement.

This article separates what is medically established from what is speculative.

Penisgate: What Is True

(and What Isn’t)

There is no established evidence that injecting hyaluronic acid into the penis improves ski jumping performance. All existing aerodynamic studies focus on suit material and design, not on biological manipulation of athletes’ bodies.

Performance-enhancing methods that alter physical measurements are usually regulated under anti-doping and equipment rules broadly defined by WADA and sport federations.

Any theoretical discussion of larger injectable volumes necessarily relates to the scrotum, which has a greater capacity to alter external surface measurements and is anatomically distinct from the penile shaft.

If regulators are examining this issue, that distinction is where their focus should lie.

The Allegations in Ski Jumping

In January 2026, the German tabloid Bild claimed that male ski jumpers might have used hyaluronic acid injections to temporarily enlarge the genital area just before 3D body scanning used to determine ski suit sizing.

The rumour suggests that a slightly larger crotch measurement could yield a suit with more surface area, potentially improving aerodynamic lift.

Official Responses

• The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) called the claims “wild rumours,” stating there is no evidence that any athlete has used such injections.

• The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said it would examine credible evidence if it emerged, but has not confirmed that this practice actually occurred.

Scientific Context

While a 2025 research article in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living modelled how small increases in suit size could affect lift and jump distance, this does not provide evidence that athletes have used medical injections to exploit it.

Experimental aerodynamic data cannot prove that injections were performed in real athletes.
